MASSENA, NY — RACER Trust today announced the presentation of an award to Perras Environmental Control Inc., in recognition of the company’s outstanding performance during a recently completed phase of remediation at RACER’s property in Massena.
The company, based in Massena, removed approximately 204,000 tons of regulated material from a section of the property known as the North Disposal Area. That’s roughly the weight of two large cruise ships. Perras completed the work, which generally involved about 50 employees, over a period of 16 months on time and without injury, a total of 72,000 safe hours worked.
“The Perras team performed exceptionally during what was a very challenging phase of remediation,” said Brendan Mullen, New York Cleanup Manager for RACER Trust. “Their professionalism, technical proficiency and safety-first approach to the work ensured that the remediation would be executed carefully and in keeping with the highest standards of environmental protection. We appreciate their efforts and look forward to continuing our partnership as we move toward completion of active remediation on the site.”
Remediation of the property, which was ordered and is overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, is scheduled for completion in 2016. RACER Trust also is marketing the property for sale to a buyer or buyers who will invest in redevelopment and job creation.
The recently completed phase of remediation involved dismantling of three buildings and the excavation and off-site disposal of PCB-impacted soils. Process-water lagoons and disposal pits were excavated and backfilled with clean soil, with excavations in places reaching as deep as 50 feet below grade.
Mr. Mullen presented the award to Perras President Jeffrey Tyo.
“I’m extremely pleased and proud to accept this honor on behalf of all Perras employees, whose everyday dedication to safety and environmental protection are hallmarks of our company,” Mr. Tyo said. “I appreciate the confidence Brendan and the RACER team have shown us, and am glad that we have justified their confidence with our performance.”
Perras’ superior technical approach and commitment to locally sourced goods and services help RACER fulfill its dual missions of conducting safe, efficient, effective environmental remediation and serving as a catalyst for jobs in its host communities.
“Perras has a well-earned reputation for excellence, and the fact that it is a part of the local community is a tremendous bonus,” Mr. Mullen said. “It is important to RACER that we provide opportunities to qualified local employers whenever possible, and Perras plays a key role in helping us fulfill that aspect of our mission.”
