RACER Trust Honors D.A. Collins Environmental Services for Successful Completion and 58,000 Safe Work Hours on Massena, N.Y., Project

MASSENA, NY — RACER Trust today announced it has presented a project safety award to D.A. Collins Environmental Services of Wilton, N.Y., in recognition of the contractor’s 58,000 safe hours worked in the successful completion of the second phase of remediation at a former General Motors Powertrain plant site in Massena.

The work, which took place over a 12 month period from April of 2012 through April of 2013, included the removal of a 20-acre concrete building slab, sub-slab tunnels, oily waste lines and soil beneath and immediately surrounding the slab, which became impacted by PCBs as a result of manufacturing activities by the former General Motors Co.

D.A. Collins removed 150,000 tons of PCB-impacted concrete, soil and debris during the course of its work. The materials were transported off-site for safe disposal.

“We’re extremely pleased with D.A. Collins’ performance, with safety right at the top,” said Brendan Mullen, New York cleanup manager for RACER Trust, which owns the former GM property and is implementing a remediation plan under the authority and supervision of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “D.A. Collins completed its work on time and on budget, and played a critical role in the overall remediation strategy for the property.”

“Our corporate motto is Safety-Quality-Productivity, and the Massena project exemplifies these values,” said David MacDougall, Director of Remediation for D.A. Collins Environmental Services. “It takes a concerted team effort to achieve these objectives on a project of this magnitude, and RACER’s technical team partnered with us from day one to make it a success.”

The remediation is expected to continue through 2016. RACER, created by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in 2011 to take possession of former GM properties at 89 locations in 14 states, is marketing the property for sale and beneficial reuse while the remediation is ongoing.

About RACER Trust

The RACER (Revitalizing Auto Communities Environmental Response) Trust was created to clean up and position for redevelopment properties and other facilities owned by the former General Motors Corp. before its 2009 bankruptcy. RACER is one of the largest holders of industrial property in the United States and is the largest environmental response and remediation trust in U.S. history. When the Trust was formed, it owned properties at 89 locations in 14 states, principally in the Midwest and Northeast. The Trust, which is independent, was created by a settlement agreement in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court between the U.S. Government, the 14 states where the former GM properties are located, and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, which owns land adjoining one of the properties in Upstate New York.
