Environmental Progress

Several studies of environmental conditions at the property have been conducted and have found the presence of metals, ammonia, and elevated pH in sediment, soil, groundwater and surface water. Other compounds found in limited areas of the property at relatively low concentrations include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and cyanide. Remedial contractors completed stabilizing the primary settling basins in accordance with the EPA-approved Work Plan.

Drainage improvements were made along the railroad tracks in 2014 and in 2015 additional delineation of PCB and manganese impacts in soil southwest of the former Nodular Plant was completed as part of Corrective Action.

Activities scheduled to be completed in the near future include improving drainage; evaluation of remedial options for PCB-impacted soils and sediment in the North Ditch area of the property; groundwater monitoring; preparing a Corrective Measures Proposal; and discharge and monitoring of storm water from the National Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) permitted outfalls.

It is expected that deed restrictions will be put in place barring any residential use of the property, prohibiting the use of groundwater for potable purposes, and requiring proper soil management. In addition, area-specific restrictions are anticipated. Work is being performed under the RCRA Corrective Action program under the oversight of EPA.
